Fillings at Caring Dental
Monitoring, protecting & repairing your teeth
Fillings are an excellent way to restore teeth that have cracks, chips or cavities. These may be caused by decay or injury, but teeth are also exposed to a lot of everyday wear and impact, so it’s no surprise they occasionally need repair.
However, at any age, there is a lot we can do to minimise the risk of decay. It is especially important to help children form good dental health habits, including a healthy, tooth-friendly diet, regular brushing and flossing, and routine dental check-ups and hygiene appointments.

Catching dental problems early
At the earliest stage, you may not be able to see or feel small holes and fractures. This is why regular dental examinations are important, so that any problem teeth can be monitored and potentially filled, when appropriate, before they worsen. This helps protect the rest of the tooth from further decay or damage, and minimises the chance of toothache.
Cavities often occur between the teeth in difficult to clean areas, or under older fillings and crowns, so it is also important to have radiographs (X-rays) taken at regular intervals. Your dentist will advise how often they are required, according to your needs.
Simple steps to feel-good fillings
- Having a filling is really nothing to worry about. Your dentist will explain the options and together you can decide the most suitable treatment and materials to achieve the functionality and appearance you would like.
- The procedure will be completed gently and carefully by your dentist, and should be painless. While some fillings can be done without numbing, you will always be offered a local anaesthetic – it’s entirely your choice. We are experts in giving pain-free injections, using numbing gel first to make it as comfortable as possible, even for the most nervous of patients.
- Your dentist will remove any decay, and the remaining healthy tooth will then be filled, restoring its structure, shape and appearance. Once the filling has set, you’ll be able to chew on it as normal.
