Practice Manager Heather brought in a cake to help raise awareness
November is Mouth Cancer Action Month, a charity campaign organised by the Oral Health Foundation to raise awareness of mouth cancer and share the important message of being ‘mouthaware’.
As part of the campaign, Caring Dental took part in Blue Wednesday, an awareness day held this year on 12th November, as a reminder of the importance of self-checks. We chose to ‘Bake something blue,’ and our practice manager Heather brought in a cake, specially created for the occasion.
Mouth cancer is a serious topic of course, but Blue Wednesday activities help people to talk openly about it, removing any stigma and raising awareness through conversation.
Dr Chris Prange, dentist and practice owner, said, “At Caring Dental, we check for mouth cancer every day, at every dental examination, so our patients are used to the concept. However, it’s really important to be aware of the condition and know the symptoms, so that everyone can self-check between appointments too.”
People are encouraged to check their mouth, lips and tongue for possible warning signs of mouth cancer. This includes ulcers that don’t heal, red or white patches, and unusual lumps or swellings in the mouth, head or neck. Recognising the signs early can make all the difference.
Checking for mouth cancer at home can take as little as 45 seconds, and is important for early diagnosis and treatment. If something doesn’t look or feel right, seek advice from your dentist or doctor.
